After a complete car restoration project you will most likely want to show it off. A perfect paint job is the best way to make a good first impression. Sending your car off to a professional is a good way to ensure the job is done right. But, if you are ambitious, patient and have the right tools, a head-turning, deep, rich, glossy paint job is within your reach.
Preparing your car for the painting process is just as important as the paint itself, maybe even more-so. Don’t skimp on preparation. It should be done very carefully and thoroughly or your finished product will be plagued with imperfections. Even though it’s tempting, don’t mask off the emblems and trim, remove them completely. Even if you consider yourself an expert taper, you are leaving yourself open to the possibility of overspray and ridges, which have a tendency to peel as time goes by. All bare metal surfaces should be scratched with 80 grit DA and it is best to clean them about an hour before you begin.
Once all your prep work is done, you can start with a few coats of epoxy. Spray two coats, allowing half an hour in between for drying. Let them set overnight, and then come back and apply any body filler and/or glazing putty. After you’ve done that and sanded it down to perfection, apply one more coat of epoxy to cover any filler spots or bare metal that may have appeared as a result of sanding. Let it set overnight.
Now, you can spray the primer. It is not necessary to sand the epoxy before priming. For the best results, spray one wet coat of primer and let it set for half an hour before applying another coat. Once the car is primed it is best to seal it with another coat of epoxy with urethane reducer added. The final coat of epoxy should set for at least 2 hours before applying the first basecoat.
When preparing your basecoat, it is best to use the slowest grade urethane reducer that you can get by with. The slower the grade, the better the adhesion and solvency. You’ll be able to see the difference in the final gloss. Just remember to give it ample time to dry between coats - at least 45 minutes. Let the basecoats sit overnight.
Now you’re ready for the clear coat. Allow a half an hour between all coats of clear for it to set. Make sure your spray nozzle is clean and debris-free during the entire painting process. Once you have applied all of the clear coats you can wet sand and buff the shine into your new, perfect paint job.
