Driving and Laws

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Obeying the literal interpretation of everyday laws is important and necessary to operate a vehicle safely and responsibly. Possessing valid automobile insurance is also necessary and the law when driving a car. Need Prices and rates for Illinois Car Insurance.

Side impact collisions account for approximately 30% of all fatalities. A driver’s failure to stop completely at stop signs reduces his or her ability to effectively scan for other traffic before proceeding. Also, thoroughly stopping and scanning prior to resumption of travel can negate another driver’s negligence or inattention. Get information regarding Iowa Car Insurance.

Yield signs directly relate to the “right of way” laws. Right of way laws are generally misunderstood by the average driver. Technically, the right of way is granted to no one. The law only states who must yield the right of way and in what instances it must be yielded. As such, a yield sign is a direction to the driver that he or she must yield the right of way to other drivers.

Simple driver courtesy can provide a much more relaxed commute and also serves to ease the flow of traffic by reducing the number of conflicts and collisions. Keep a good attitude while operating a motor vehicle.

It is essential when driving to have this good attitude. DTA’s incorporate the psychological Attitude States of Parent, Adult, and Child into the driving task becomes an important tool in ensuring that we remain in a “state” wherein we can make logical, rational, low-risk decisions under stress about issues which may confront us while driving.

If you find yourself angry about another driver’s actions and develop a subsequent desire to “punish” the other driver for his/her “bad” driving, you are endangering not only the other driver, but yourself as well.

Road rage directly relates to angry confrontations that result from anger over the driving of others. Road rage is using your child psychological attitude, and always produces negative results.

A simple recognition that drivers as well as yourself do and will continue to make mistakes. Taking what others do on the road personally and not responding like an adult can create a very dangerous situation.

Driving in the night

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Driving at night is hazardous just like day driving, except more so because of your lack of visibility. This factor limits one’s ability to utilize visual data available during daylight, such as peripheral vision and depth perception.

Also, glare recovery from headlights, reduced visual acuity in the evening as we age, and the likelihood that you will encounter a greater number of impaired drivers when compared to daytime driving are all factors which dictate that special attention be paid to the driving task during the evening hours. One of the greatest perils of night driving is “overdriving” your headlights. To understand the danger of this phenomenon, let’s discuss the issue of reaction time and its effect on a driver’s ability to deal with emergency situations.

Simply put, reaction distance is the distance your vehicle will travel from the moment you IDENTIFY a problem to the moment in which you begin to implement an avoidance maneuver.

Generally speaking, this is the amount of time your brain requires to process the information or to IDENTIFY the problem, PREDICT the consequence of the problem for your driving, DECIDE on an appropriate avoidance maneuver, and finally to begin to EXECUTE the maneuver.

During this “reaction time,” your vehicle will travel a distance (which increases with speed) in which you are practically unable to alter its direction or speed. For this reason, excessive speed is especially hazardous in the evening hours, when illumination of potential hazards is significantly decreased.

For example, a vehicle traveling 60 MPH is also traveling at approximately 88 feet per second. At 60 MPH we calculate a reaction distance of 132 feet (1 second average human reaction time per Texas Driver’s Handbook standard).

Therefore, if you spot a potential hazard in your low beam headlight illumination area - as you may already know, low beam headlights must project light to a minimum distance of 100 feet - you will not have sufficient time to stop or initiate an avoidance maneuver since at 60 MPH with a Texas standard of 1 seconds of reaction distance, you will have a reaction distance of 132 feet which is 32 feet farther than the low beam illumination area.

Reverse With Care

Backing up a vehicle can cause accidents. There are different tips that can be helpful while performing it. By using these tips, you can avoid possible automobile accidents with objects and other vehicles.

Backing Tip #1 - Performing a check around you’re vehicle, up to and including walking around it, is always a good idea. If at all possible, a visual inspection should be made around the vehicle before initial backing. Because of their unpredictability, children require special search attention. Remember, it is always best to turn around and look out the back windows prior to and during backing. Never use mirrors alone for backing.

A pre-trip visual inspection of the area surrounding and under the vehicle reduces the possibility of a collision with a small object, such as an animal, while backing.

Backing Tip #2 - Visibility and Appropriate Posture Good posture is essential to safe driving and visibility, yet some are more concerned with comfort or looking cool to do this. Drivers who sit up straight; have appropriate distance to pedals, steering wheel and other controls; and have placed both hands on the steering wheel at the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions are best prepared for defensive driving and efficient vehicle backing.

Backing Tip #3 - Speed Control Modulating the brakes, pressing and releasing the brakes, can help control speed when backing. Rarely, if ever, is pressure on the accelerator necessary for backing.

You should never back at a speed above 3mph. Adherence to this standard will reduce the likelihood of serious injury in the event of a backing collision.

There are also steering techniques used while backing a vehicle. First, avoid sharp turns. Avoiding sharp turns or steering wheel inputs while backing is essential, as the average driver is not adequately prepared for the enhanced responses to steering wheel input that backing creates.

In most instances, backing around a corner is an illegal maneuver. However, in an emergency, backing can be validated in such circumstances. Limited visibility makes it very prone to car accidents. Utilizing these techniques can limit you’re chances of being involved in an accident.

The first rule is how well the shop is known for its business. Talk to other sports car owners, your mechanic and others to find the shop that’s right for your sports car. A really good shop will be known by everyone in town.

They will be able to help you find it or the parts you need if they do not have the parts or cannot sell you them. You will always get some help from going to an auto body shop. When you go to a junk yard or if you have already been to one you will be amazed at how many cars you will see when you first get there. The whole point to a junk yard is that they bring the broke or junk car to the junk yard and then they just sell the parts out of the cars to make extra money to run the junk yard. So if you are ever looking for spare parts for a car you may just find yourself needing to visit a junk yard.

Ask the shop if they have any guarantees that they may have in case they don’t fix your ride to the potential you know can be done. A shop owner who does not seem to believe in what they can do is probably a bad choice.

Auto Collision Repair Shop: Find A Good Auto Mechanic

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

What’s the deal with the Auto Body Shops? Everyone might be asking themselves that question. It’s just a matter of knowing what things you should know before you get mad or happy with them. Your car is too important for you, and you should know how to save your money on some items before it’s too late.

Your car has sustained $1500.00 in damage; your insurance company pays you less a deductible. You schedule your vehicle to be repaired at your neighborhood auto body shop. Two days before you take in your vehicle, you get a nasty credit card bill.

There are many different services that can be performed on your vehicle as far as auto body repairs are concerned. Many auto body shops offer a variety of services that include paint touch up, paint less dent removal, bumper repair, wheel rim repair, windshield repair and much more.

You should start looking by asking around or dropping into local auto body repair shops in your area. Ask to see what kind of work they perform, how long it will take to complete the repairs, how much it will cost you to get the work completed, and the kind of process they use to repair vehicles, and anything else you feel is important to your specific needs.

That is the secured interest would try to collect, if the vehicle is repossessed seems like it is a lost cause. If the auto is 100% owned, than it does not matter what the owner does with the insurance payout.

One thing to check is how long the shop has been in business for. This is not a sole indicator, but if the shop has been in business for some time chances are they are reliable and should do a good job on your vehicle. Don’t choose a shop that has secured a bad name for their shop. Also, if you were to have any problems down the road you want to be sure that they will be around to uphold any warranty or guarantee that they will most likely give you.

The only way for a shop to keep absorbing blows like this from cash strapped consumers, is to take drastic cuts in what is owed to them, cut their estimate, or even eat the customer’s deductible, which is not even legal in some states. Why would a shop need to work to just keep the lights on, might be better to just close the doors. The insurance company pays the retail estimate, they by no means encourage the customer to cut deals with the shop, there objective is to put the customer back in there prior position. The repair decision ultimately lies on the finicky auto owner.

Even though quality is one of the biggest things you are looking for, you will want to get a good deal. Don’t just choose the first shop that you like. Look around at others and compare all aspects of them and then choose the one you feel is right for you and your vehicle.

Auto Body Repair Shop: Don’t Worry About Your Accident

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

When you have had the unfortunate event of being in a automotive collision, the last thing you need is to have a bad experience with an auto body shop not doing their job. A good auto body shop will fix your car back to pre-loss condition, both in appearance and in structural and mechanical integrity. A great auto body shop will almost make you feel like the accident never happened. They should start with customer service better then you get at a good restaurant.

When you buy a car, it may be the right type of car but you might not like the color. The color can mean a lot and even determine how you like the car. Perhaps you buy a car that has the perfect body but is pink. Therefore you will probably want to get the car painted.

I have been in this industry for over 25 years in the same area, I have worked in high quality auto body shops large and small, and have owned my own collision and custom shop in Portland Oregon for the last 8 years. In my area there are hundreds of auto body repair shops in a very small area, yet I only know a few I would trust with my vehicles. So for the most part you have to be as informed as you can, and ask a lot of questions.

I am going to give you some information about the industry that will hopefully help to make that informed decision a little easier. First, do not let your insurance company tell you where to have your vehicle repaired, in most cases they have contracts with the shop to save them money in exchange for sending them your vehicle. in this case the insurance company saves money, the shop gets the work but has to cut corners to keep the cost down for the insurance company. And you, the one that pays the insurance company all those inflated premiums, and pays the body shop your deductible gets a substandard repair. The insurance company may say “if you don’t take the job to our repair shop we can’t guaranty the work”, the fact is any and all good auto body shops guaranty their work for as long as you own your car, if they don’t, go somewhere else.

Next thing to do is be sure to question the person who is estimating your damage, smaller shop owners will usually take care of you personally, and in most cases, actually be involved in the repair process. In most of the larger or chain shops the person writing the estimate on how to fix your vehicle is a salesperson, usually having absolutely no experience repairing cars, not to say that the techs working at that shop wont fix your car correctly, but they may just not feel like rewriting the estimate the way it should of been written to begin with.

Step 2: Find out if there is anyone at a post higher than the manager. If yes, get an appointment fixed with the higher authorities of that auto body shop. Speak to them directly if possible; otherwise just send them an e-mail explaining your problems. If this solution also does not work, try the next step.

Ask if the body shop is on any insurance programs or direct repair programs, if they are ask why? the only reason I know why a auto body shop would agree to be on a program would be to get work that they could not get on their own. Again this does not mean just because they have a direct repair program they are not a great shop, but if they have 20 then I would be a little concerned? Ask them to explain.

Many car owners will buy an old car that runs great but has a bad paint job and structural damage. Within a few weeks of getting that car, they could be driving it down the road and no one would suspect it was rusted and severely dented thanks to the hard work of companies that do body work and paint jobs for cars in the Los Angeles area. There really is no better way to make your car look new again.

Auto Collision Repair Shop: Lifetime Guarantee

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

One of the very first things you should think about when choosing a Collision shop is, “How much experience does the shop have?” It’s not enough to know how many years a shop has been in business, but it’s a good place to start. You should also take into account the extreme climate here in Monroe County, and the extra experience required to deal with the damage road salt can cause.

Make sure you ask the manager, and then follow up with “How much experience do your technicians have?” That’s the really important question, because you want to know that the folks who will actually be working on your car or truck, repairing the sheet metal, straightening the frame, and painting the body panels really know what they are doing. Experience, as they say, truly is the best teacher.

Even today though, work done by technicians has changed by technology. If you look above, there will be vacuum lines connected to sanders and grinders; these are to pull any dirt and dust away from this area of the shop. It is amazing how clean these areas are kept.

Once the metal work has been completed, the next stage is the paint prep area, normally in this area dust extraction systems are used to remove any dust that occurs during sanding and paint primer spraying. Body shops use infrared light systems in this area to cure paint primer quickly. These lights usually speed up the drying time, allowing the primer to cure in 20 minutes rather than 24 hours; therefore, your car is ready to go a lot quicker.

You could also ask to speak with one or two of the technicians, and ask them straight out what kind of a facility they work for. Either way, ask questions to determine technician satisfaction.

The most important thing at this later stage is that the vehicle gets finished in a paint booth that is clean and dust free. This outweighs a dirty booth of a fantastic design.

This is when maybe you should ask to see any finished vehicles in the body shop to check the painters work before leaving your vehicle and any money is spent. The things to look for are, smooth finishes that have very few dust specs and ensure the colors match from one panel to another. These are evidence of a quality paint spray done by a professional.

How long has the shop been open? How much experience do the technicians have? How satisfied are the techs? Hopefully, asking these three questions will help you feel more confident and comfortable the next time the unavoidable happens, and you are faced with the need to choose the very best collision repair facility
