We are not all flat-landers who live, work and commute day by day on flat prairie land. Many live in hilly and mountainous areas. What occurs when you put on the “brakes” The pressure that you apply to the pedal is transmitted to the brake system master cylinder (either directly or through a booster assembly by means of hydraulic brake fluid to the wheel cylinders fundamentally through a series of steel lines and flexible hoses.
As the pressure is supplied to the wheel cylinders, it causes the cylinder pistons to move and pressure is applied to the brake drum or discs through the brake shoes or pads. The friction that then exists between the brake shoes or pads (which are lined with friction materials) and the brake drum or disc is what stops the wheels from turning round. Hence your wheels will stop rotating and your vehicle should slow down and come to a stop.
When you step on the brakes momentum throws most of the automobile’s weight in a forward direction. Approximately 60 % of the braking force generated in a vehicle is created and exerted by the front wheels, as opposed to the rear wheel brake system. For balanced braking it is necessary to have greater braking and stopping capacity at the front end of the car. While it is true that vehicles are more trouble free, requiring less maintenance, and with more electronic and automated systems today does not mean “no maintenance” ever. Auto dealership service departments still do a roaring business. Even though some avid auto owners may insist that their cars, trucks or SUVs never ever “break down” , Toyota and other Japanese auto dealership service departments are still in business with plenty of repairs on hand, and a long queue if you wish to book your automobile for service.
Next never crawl under a car or vehicle that is not adequately supported. Next in line never ever rely on the auto jack alone to hold up the car, truck, van or bus that you or your team are working on. The history will never forget how Studebaker created their name in producing wagons in 1852. They started making electric automobile and gasoline-powered cars in 1902. Studebaker stood out in the market because of their quality and reliable cars that became famous in making new speed records. Though they experienced trouble after uniting with Piece-Arrow in 1933, they still able to survive through the released of the 1930s Depression.
Historically, Studebaker introduced its all-new Champion in 1939. It was leaner, lighter version of the full-sized car that established its fame and placed the company’s models in the succeeding years. During the Second World War, automobile manufacturers contributed to the war but they started producing civilian cars after-wards. They produced prewar models while developing their new postwar cars. Still the amphibious vehicle “The Weasel” not only lead the charge in many of the landings of US troops but also its advanced technologies and mechanical reliability led the way to many of the amphibious and “water cars” that we have designed and built today on the marketplace. In 1942, Studebaker began manufacturing their new design. Meanwhile, they did not incorporate the President and Commander models in 1946. They only manufactured the “Champion,” better known as “Skyway Champion.”
The company produced quality cars, better known to be “coming or going cars.” Humorist couldn’t differentiate the front from the back because the front and rear side of the car were alike. Studebaker released their three-box designs in 1949. It includes Land Cruiser, Commander and Studebaker Champion. Meanwhile, Commander and Land Cruiser had the same technology of the Champion models such as extended rear door, front fenders, longer wheelbase and hood.
Studebaker cars were famous to be “coming or going cars.” The front to rear were alike that humorist couldn’t identify the front from the back. The company released their three-box post war model in 1949. They were the Land Cruiser, Studebaker Champion, and Commander. Studebaker had some outstanding models such as Hawk series and Avanti with their advanced styling, fiberglass bodies, and such introduced such innovative features as safer faster “disc brakes”, as well as optional “turbocharged” turbo engines. But they experienced extreme difficulty because of several independent car producers and lost its fame and luster in 1966, culminating in the closure of their Canadian auto assembly in the Canadian steel town of Hamilton, Ontario.
Studebaker can never be replaced by today’s high technology cars. They started from a small company and became famous of their quality designs, and reliable models.

Wintertime driving can be more than challenging and even downright dangerous. Now before the cold winter descends on us from Canada preparation for the driving conditions that await us in the snow and ice are in order. Prepare your vehicle - be it auto, car, truck or SUV now. It pays to work ahead. Why wait for spring or in this case winter-time cold weather driving .
Some people and authorities will hold that all season year round radial tires are “just fine”. Others will say not and that you need a distinct set of tires for the winter-time season , these are referred to as “Snow Tires”. To the greatest extent it depends on what geographic areas that you live in and traverse, your climate and your driving habits and trips. You may have roadside assistance offered as part of a package from your new or used car dealer that you purchased your auto , tires or battery from , but why take the chance of inconvenience and delay ?
One point to note and remember - winter tires , can be noisy on dry pavement - never mind the clicking sound emanating from studded tires at high traffic speeds. On the other side of the road so to speak - the nosier the tread design or designs the overall better performance on the roadway by your wintertime tires in the snow. Compromise to reduce noise also reduces tire and vehicle pulling power in loose snow and mud driving conditions. All in all it can be said by auto service and vehicle safety experts , that full-circle , welded-lug chains provide several times more pulling power than even the most highly rated , and expensive snow tires , but are of course a lot less convenient and even unsightly for automobile owners and motorists.
In terms of tire” studs” as mentioned earlier that due to their destructive affect on highways and roads many locales do not allow the use of studs or “studded wintertime tires” on their roadways. Note though that if allowed in your driving areas - that on both packed snow and ice these devices work very well at reducing stopping distances.
If its a simple matter of occasional tire chains for a one time trip for a skiing vacation to Calgary or for relatively light non demanding snow and icy road conditions then you might well consider the easier to set up , though offering less traction and gripping power , easier to set up and install tire chain varieties. For occasional use around the city, or one time use per through the Christmas and ice rut seasons of dead cold January , motorists and vehicle owners might well consider the advice of their trusted local garage mechanic and consider the early and prudent purchase of two or three strap-or-buckle on chains rather than full-circle type of tyre chains. Be prepared - do not wait to look around in the deep recesses of the trunk of your car - for chains when you are stuck in the snow.

The Duesy. The Dusenberg fine automotive creations. These legends have not only entered the American if not European and worldwide vocabulary as “Its a Doozie”. On top of that the impact of the Duesenberg Motor Company live on today in the likes of many replica large touring cars that you may see the likes of Winnipeg’s famous scion Peter Nygard.
What is interesting and of great note , is that it was not that early innovators of this fine automotive tradition - the pair of the two world renowned car racing Dusenberg brothers - that resulted in this ultra fine luxury stable of products - but rather business and marketing staff and future factory owners. Indeed the model that the Duesenbeg family produced was a rather staid product. Their “Model A” was introduced at the’20 New York Auto Show and then went into full production in December’21. This Dusenberg Model “A” was from the designed from the same name racing vehicle that had won the French Grand Prix race , where its innovative hydraulic brakes had proved to be the most decisive factor in the automotive racing circuit. The A was of a most durable design and overall construct that it would later appear in the Indianapolis 500 mile race as late as’34 .
The Duesenberg J was the creation of Mr. Errett Lobban Cord , who gained management and ownership control of the Duesenberg Motor Company of Indianapolis in’26 and made it an integral component of its his Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg empire. This great automotive industry pioneer said himself many times that his vision was to father a home gown domestic American car that was as best as the world could produce. To this day many would still believe that the Duesenberg was of course of European - German, American or perhaps Italian vintage and origins. Even the name of the automotive creation Duesenberg belies this point and viewpoint.
Why was it that it took a luxury high end automotive series of products to bring the Duesenberg line of motor vehicles to the automotive historical forefront and not the innovations of the racing car brothers ? First as always is cost - that is in relation to its marketplace. Always consumers and car buyers look and compare a vehicle for purchase to other products in its market segment and niche. Its a price comparison process to the “competition” and competitive vehicles in the auto transportation marketplace. The Model A was priced over the budget of most car buyers - a hefty seven to 8 thousand dollars - which was a very large sum in the eras of the roaring’20’s. Also add historical happen-chance to the mix. After all this was the era post World War 1. It was not only Duesenberg which suffered from the associated stigma of a Teutonic Germanic nameplate. The Chrysler Corporation as well suffered from the same automotive marketing issues to the American motoring public and communities.
Yet as is always interesting in the automotive market it was a business people along with marketing staff that brought the wonderful auto creation to fruition not off all things the racing pair of the Duesenberg brothers. Cord immediately initiated the design of the Model J super car. The rest as they say is simply history and historical fact of the future mainstay of the American economy - the automotive industry.

When most drivers think of their autos cooling system all that comes to mind is their radiator ” the humble rad. The cooling system of your car keeps your autos engine within normal ranges and provides you both comfortable maintenance free driving and heat from their interior car heater during the cold winter time or to defrost their windshield.
Yet your car or trucks rad or cooling system is not 100 % maintenance free. Forget about it and you may well have engine overheating damage, substantial auto engine repairs or worse, and no heat from your heater.
How can anyone be taught how to check the coolant level. Simply open up the engine hood when your car has been sitting for a couple of hours. Look for a coolant canister . Its the overflow bottle container and looks simply like a plastic jug. If you do not know how to open your hood - often bonnets today can be a puzzle to open - then consult the auto manual that came with the car , online , or at the worst call your factory dealer or local garage. Just have your auto make , model and year available handy. To judge fluid levels simply look on the side of the coolant overflow container. There will be a marking “cold” or “cold fluid level”. Simply compare the two marks - that of the level of the fluid in the coolant container and the mark on the side of the bottle. Do you have an adequate amount ?
Taking good care of fluid levels under the hood can spare you auto repair bills at your local garage and may well keep you away from car and truck dealers for extra years to come. Its well worth the effort all in all and only requires simple and ongoing attention to detail. After all its your car or truck and your vehicle repair or new car replacement costs out of your own pocketbook.
Its not only a matter of long term truck or car car and long life. Its not only about keeping your vehicle in good running order and a proper ongoing maintenance schedule. it is also about safety. If your vehicle breaks down prematurely or your rad overheats due to low coolant levels you may be stranded in less than desirable circumstances. In a cold winter time period - say in northern Alberta Canada or Manitoba without a properly working heat defrost mechanism you are a menace on the road to other drivers and vehicles on roads and highways.

Do a walk around each and every time that you get into your automobile. Fluid on the ground can indicate safety issues as well as unnecessary repairs down the road. Its just routine vehicle maintenance simple as that.
Make it a point of your daily driving routine to check for vehicle leaks as well as to verify fluid levels of your vehicle. Its just part of regular preventive maintenance.
If you note a green or pink watery type liquid ( as opposed to oil type leaks), that is under your automotive vehicles in puddles , think of antifreeze leaks. Some vehicles , including busses or vehicles run year round in warm climates , where winter freeze up never occurs , may run simply on 100 % water. Regardless a leak of radiator fluid indicates coolant loss. This may result in damaging engine overheating. Engines should not run very hot for too long. In cold Manitoba and Alberta winters , loss or even lower levels of radiator glycol antifreeze coolant will result in a cold car in which the auto interior heater never seems to work , or put out much heat. If you cannot get engine heat how can you defrost your windshield ? Its thus not only a convenience and comfort issue but also one of roadside safety.
Next in line is brake fluid. Loss of brake fluid can be downright dangerous as you may well have lost braking ability. Transmission fluid loss can lead to mechanical failures down the line. It can be checked via dipstick under the hood. Both transmission and power steering fluids are similar products ” a light oil type liquid usually with a reddish, almost rose color. Gasoline itself can leak from a tank. You should be able to discern and odor if gas leaks. Take great care as gas itself is very flammable, and on top of that a gas leak can lead to an engine fire.
There are a couple of type of engine and auto fluids that can leak, that which though not as common can be troublesome and as well should draw notice and attention. Simple motor oil leaking from the oil drip pan on the bottom of your auto engine. These are downright unsightly and will stain driveways and roadways. Its usually a slow leak, which does not drain the engine but will do damage to property and cause unsightly stains.
Make it a practice to have your oil level checked via the dipstick under your hood when you fill up with gas.
