I read an article in Insurance Times a few weeks ago where the financial ombudsman had said that he would support a policyholder against the insurer, excluding claims for leaving keys in or near a vehicle. I then wondered if the same would apply to a motor home.
So the family and I had rather a late night in our motorhome playing cards and so we were all quite tired when we eventually turned in for the night, meaning that the next morning we were already late for our arranged meeting with our friends and fellow motor-homers the Wilsons. Then came the usual morning commotion, the queue for the shower and the breakfast rush, then by the time we were ready to leave our friends had decided to explore the countryside without us.
Then I couldn’t find the keys. We looked everywhere, and in my usual patient and understanding way I first accused every member of the family of hiding them, progressed to accusing them of not helping me to look for them properly and concluded by accepting my son’s version of events that aliens had come from Mars and stolen the keys to my motor home. I went to the cab to get my mobile and call my insurance company for help. I was stranded in the middle of a field with a grumpy family… and it was about to rain.
There in the middle of the cab, sitting next to my phone, were the keys! I couldn’t believe that I’d left the keys to my beloved motorhome in the cab. Being an insurance man I couldn’t help but wonder if my motorhome would have been insured if it had been stolen under those circumstances. And so my mind drifted back to the Insurance Times article.
If my motorhome had been a car the ombudsman would have considered
Location
Was I in a position to deter a thief
Was I recklessly ignoring the risks
Mitigating factors
Whether I knew about the exclusion in the insurance policy
I would like to think I would have been given this kind of consideration as well with my motorhome. I would say you have a much higher chance of getting a comprehensive insurance deal to cover any situation if you go through an insurance broker.

It is pretty easy to find cheap car rental, you just know a few tricks. Did you know that it is better to rent a car in the weekend or for a week? Do you know how to get an upgrade or a few extra hours for free? Are you choosing the right insurances and are you prepaying the car. Learn all the tricks to get an inexpensive car rental.
The easiest way to save a lot of money is to compare the different car rental agencies’ prices. It would be very time-consuming to do it yourself, but fortunately car rental search websites has been constructed, so you just have to enter dates and location. Then you can see the cheapest price for the various car models.
Try to plan your car rental need for the weekend. Most car rental agencies have special weekend offers, so you can save a lot of money, if you rent the car in the weekend.
Another way to find cheap car rental is long term rental. It is often possible to rent a car for a week for the same price as 4 or 5 days will cost you.
Do you want a large Audi instead of a small Fiat? But do you not want to pay for it. Then try to ask for a free upgrade. Often the car rental agencies will give it to you, if the can. The reason is that they want your loyalty, and a cheap way to get it, is to offer you a little extra service. But it is an extra bonus, you cannot be certain to get. So do not plan your whole vacation on it.
There is a lot of money to be saved on the insurance. But before you say no to the insurance, you should read the policy closely, because it can cost you a lot of money, if you are involved in an accident and you are not insured.
On the other hand the car rental agencies earn a lot of extra money on the insurance part. So do pick the insurances, you need; no less and no more.
Remember that a rental day is 24 hours. So if you e.g. arrive in the airport at 2 pm and have to leave at 5 pm, you can save a rental day by collecting the car a little later; or returning it a little earlier. Sometimes it is also possible to make a deal with the car rental agency, so you can keep the car a few extra hours for free
And a final advice: prepay the car. It is normally cheaper than if you rent it at arrival in the airport. So find a good price on the Internet and reserve it. Then it is also faster when you arrive in the airport.

Keeping your caravan secure is obviously of the utmost importance as it far easier for a thief to steal a caravan than a car. If you plan on leaving your caravan unattended for a long time then as you can imagine, the risk for your insurance provider will be large.
There are several things that you can do to reduce your caravan insurance, you can use proven security devices to disable the tow hitch in order to make it harder for your caravan to be stolen. You can also make sure that your caravan is stored within a locked compound as that will also help to protect it.
The price that you pay for your caravan insurance can vary a huge amount from company to company, so you will want to ask caravan insurance experts as they will be able to offer additional guidance on how to reduce your annual premiums. Quite often the simple addition of a few security items will greatly reduce your payments.
It is also important that you take security precautions when you are using your caravan. You will need to be careful that you have insurance cover for any possessions that you will be leaving in the caravan. Obviously it is not a good idea to leave valuables on display, or items of significant value in the caravan at all.
You will need to specify any specific expensive items that you will have with you when you are away travelling. Your policy may well have an item value limit or require you to itemise valuables. Not all policies require this, so make sure that you do ask your broker of any restrictions.
So basically, to avoid any nasty shocks if you should need to make a claim, make sure that you go through absolutely everything that you will be carrying with your insurance provider to make sure it is al covered.

Caravan insurance is important to have in order to ensure that your caravan is covered for any costs that might be incurred by accidental damage or because of a fire, extreme weather conditions or theft.
The majority of caravan insurance policies will cover any damage that has been genuinely caused out of the owners control by fire, flood, bad weather, accidental or malicious damage and theft.
The possessions within your caravan will usually be covered up to a limit which will be predefined in your policy, and will usually be around 300.
This possession cover is meant to cover belongings that would usually, in case of emergency, be left in the caravan such as furniture, curtains etc. However, money, jewellery and other valuables are not usually covered under standard caravan insurance and should be covered under all risk sections of your household contents insurance.
You have a duty of care to look after your property, so theft from your caravan will only be covered if it is properly locked up whilst you are away from it. So there will not be any cover if you leave it open, or you leave your belongings under an awning or in a toilet tent.
By the same token, if you do not fit your caravan with a wheel clamp and hitch lock and it gets stolen, you will not be covered.
There may be different requirements for the security of your selected caravan site in order for your insurance to be valid. For example some insurers may insist that you park your caravan in a registered holiday park, whereas some may insist that your chosen destination in concealed by fencing or hedging around the boundaries.
You may be able to include damage to awnings at a small extra charge, usually there is a restriction on the age of the awning that can be covered, typically awnings that are more than seven years old cannot be covered.

There has been on going debates about the importance of taking rental insurance, when you are renting an automobile. Many believe that their own car insurance will cover them while they are driving a rental and other feel that the credit card they use to rent the car offers them protection. Somethings that you should take into consideration is that rental companies only push this rental insurance for two reasons; the first is so that they will make extra money on your rental and the second is so that the rental insurance will protect their car. In the end, their car is all that is important to them.
Here are some of the most asked questions about rental insurance, and the answer are most likely going to surprise many of you.
Q: DOESNT MY REGULAR CAR INSURANCE POLICY COVER ME WHEN I AM DRIVING A RENTAL CAR?
A: This is a big YES! Almost all car insurance companies will cover you, even when you are driving a rental car. I would, however, suggest that you contact your insurance company prior to getting your rental just to be 100% sure.
Q: WILL THE CREDIT CARD THAT I USED TO RENT THE CAR COVER ME FOR ANY DAMAGES?
A: Again the answer to this is most likely. Most major credit cards like Visa, American Express, and Master Card do offer you additional insurance protection when you charge your vehicle rental to your credit card. Again this is something that you can easily check into by calling the company in advance.
Q: IF MY CREDIT CARD AND INSURANCE COMPANIES COVER ME FOR RENTAL, DO I STILL NEED TO TAKE OUT CAR RENTAL INSURANCE FROM TEH RENTAL COMPANY?
A: Absolutely not. Many companies will tell you that your insurance wont cover everything or that you are leaving yourself open to liability if you don’t take their coverage, however most car rental coverage doesn’t even cover you as well as your own. Many times the companies and their representatives will lead you to believe that this coverage is necessary, but in reality it will provide you with no benefit at all if you are already covered, and therefore this will just be unnecessary money that you will be handing over to the car rental agent.
So before yo arrive at the rental car company to pick up your vehicle check with your insurance and credit car companies to see what you are covered for. This will make you more confident when you refuse the rental companies insurance and you will be saving a lot of money.
